Haris Purnomo

Born in Delanggu, Klaten, Indonesia 1956, Haris Purnomo graduated from Sekolah Seni Rupa Indonesia (School of art), Yogyakarta, 1975 and Sekolah Tinggi Seni Rupa Indonesia ‘Asri’ (College of Fine Art), Yogyakarta, 1984.

Haris Purnomo is an Indonesian artist. He began his career at the end of the Seventies, when he joined the Indonesian New Art Movement which was founded in Jakarta in 1975. Through this movement, Haris Purnomo began to receive acknowledgment as an artist who made realistic works. 

Haris Purnomo does not see realistic painting and photography as a linear development, where one negates the other. He does not put these two media of expression in opposition. Instead, he has brought them together. 

The babies in his paintings are not meant to show subjects within reality, such as birth, a baby’s innocence, or population density (as perceived for example through Red Feather, 2012)
